Burnout is something every single diabetic will experience unfortunately, we always put 100% effort into making sure our blood sugars are at their best that it can be way too much to handle at times. Burnout in a diabetic term is when you feel you aren’t reaping the rewards of constant injections, monitoring etc - that you feel you cannot try any harder, that the only option is to stop. Sometimes on a much larger scale, experiencing a burnout for a day or two can be a positive thing for your overall management but it can also be extremely damaging to your overall health.

I suffered from burnout for 5+ years, ended up on life support around 6 times with additional DKA experiences. Diabetes is tough.

When I am in diabetes burnout, the following always occurs:

  • I do the bare minimum injection wise, diabetes is something I do not want to think about
  • I end up sleeping a lot more, needing 1-2 naps in the day, my body is working extremely hard so this isn’t surprising
  • More likely to eat increased quantity of sugar
  • My mental health decreases massively
  • All injections hurt
  • I believe I am failing at being a diabetic
  • Skin gets so much worse
  • I feel constantly angry due to constant high blood sugar

Diabetes is tough, we all experience burnout, most importantly YOU ARE NOT FAILING! Let yourself rest, recuperate and recover on a timescale that suits you.

Behind the Burnout Truth Campaign

With National Diabetes Awareness Month happening, we believe it's important to continue our commitment with sharing the support as at the end of the day,  we understand and acknowledge that diabetes management is a 24/7 experience.

With that in mind, we've created a #BurnoutTruth initiative to use this chance to shine a public light on an area that's often experienced in the dark by yourself.

Burnout truth is all about showing the realness of having chronic illness burnout and normalising this experience so that others out there know that it is real. By sharing different community stories, we hope that we're able to communicate that the main message is to know that these things happen because you’re a human, whether it’s with diabetes or outside of having diabetes. 😊
