#BURNOUTTRUTH: KEELEY'S STORY (T1D MUM)

by IBD Medical on October 28, 2024

Burnout Truth for a diabetes mum

Keeley wants to bring a different perspective to diabetes, where she is hopping on to share a parent's perspective. Keeley opens up about her makeup being almost like a mask to cover what's been happening behind the scenes. But what's different is that she isn't diagnosed with diabetes herself, and finds diabetes burnout a hard topic to talk about without feeling selfish.

Going through the ups and downs when looking after her daughter, Keeley talks about what her daughter must actually feel like when going through the highs and lows.

With the shared experience and the care Keeley has for her daughter, she feels it is important to share this unique perspective on:

  • How she has been handling it from her end, and how she's putting her health first so that she can be there for her daughter
  • How real diabetes burnout is and why it is so important to do something as simple as talking to others about it
  • The emotions she feels when she checks up on her daughter every night to  make sure she's able to give the correct injection when needed, rather than kissing Layla goodnight and leaving her to have a good night's rest
  • Having to go through waking your kids up to force them to eat and drink due to hypo
  • Making sure you're on top of things when it comes to equipment and medications
  • Watching Layla burst into tears when she's had enough

Keeley's one big advice would be to make sure you're being kind to anyone who may be going through this.

Have a listen to her and her daughter's story below and feel free to show Keeley some love and support in the comments!

Behind the Burnout Truth Campaign

With National Diabetes Awareness Month happening, we believe it's important to continue our committment with sharing the support as at the end of the day,  we understand and acknowledge that diabetes management is a 24/7 experience.

With that in mind, we've created a #BurnoutTruth initiative to use this chance to shine a public light on an area that's often experienced in the dark by yourself.

Burnout truth is all about showing the realness of having chronic illness burnout and normalising this experience so that others out there know that it is real. By sharing different communtiy stories, we hope that we're able to communicate that the main message is to know that these things happen because you’re a human, whether it’s with diabetes or outside of having diabetes. 😊
