While it is reasonable to respond to difficult situations with anxiety there are ways to reduce the risk and impact of anxiety and discomfort.

Practising breathing and mindfulness can be incredibly helpful! Breathing exercises are a highly effective way to minimise anxiety and improve your mental health. Breathing exercises are easy-to-learn and have countless benefits. Some of these benefits are that; they help you relax and focus, they reduce stress levels, they increase the control of your emotions and they can improve sleep.

Tips before starting your breathing exercises:

  • Be aware of your posture – sit or stand straight with your shoulder back but avoid being stiff
  • Limit your attention and focus on your own respiratory movements
  • Be aware as air enters your body through your mouth and nose and fills your chest
  • Notice when your thoughts drift and gently bring them back to focus on your breathing
  • Breathe through your stomach
  • Think of reassuring thoughts whilst practising your breathing, such as “I am inhaling calm, and exhaling stress”

The practice is crucial to mastering breathing exercises. It might take a while to find out what works best for you, try to experiment. There are plenty of apps available that can help you practice mindfulness or breathing. The longer you stick with your mindfulness routine the more relaxed and aware of your body you will become.
