Driving with Diabetes: Essential Tips for Safe Journeys

by IBD Medical on December 08, 2025

Driving with diabetes

Most people with diabetes drive safely every day. But because blood sugar can change quickly, especially if you take insulin or certain medications, a little planning makes every trip safer.

Why low blood sugar matters behind the wheel

Hypoglycemia can cause dizziness, confusion, slow reactions and, in severe cases, loss of consciousness. Even a mild low can affect your judgment before you notice symptoms.

Why high blood sugar matters too

Very high glucose can cause tiredness, blurred vision and poor concentration, all of which affect driving.

Before you drive

  • Check your glucose with your CGM or meter before every drive if you take insulin or medication that can cause lows.
  • Don't drive below 70 mg/dL. Many care teams suggest being above 90 mg/dL before setting off. Ask yours what's right for you.
  • Treat a low first, then wait until your glucose is back in a safe range and you feel fully recovered.

On the road

  • On long drives, stop every couple of hours at a rest area or gas station to check your glucose.
  • If you feel any symptoms of a low, pull over safely, turn off the engine, treat it and don't drive until you've recovered.
  • Keep fast-acting carbs, like glucose tablets or juice, within easy reach, not in the trunk.
  • Keep your meter, CGM receiver or phone and snacks in the car, and protect insulin from heat with an insulin cooling pouch. Never leave insulin in a hot car.
  • Carry medical ID so others know you have diabetes if you need help.

Licensing and insurance in the US

Driver's license rules for people with diabetes vary by state, and some states ask about episodes of severe low blood sugar. Commercial drivers have additional federal requirements. Check your state DMV's guidance, and see the American Diabetes Association's resources on driving and discrimination if you have concerns about your license, insurance or job.

With the right planning, people with diabetes can enjoy the freedom of driving with confidence.
