My Diabetes Scary Moments (part 1)

by IBD Medical on July 22, 2024

The Glucology Diabetes Community is getting vulnerable with you by sharing what scares some of our community members when it comes to managing and living with diabetes. The intention isn’t to scare you, but to hopefully show that management isn’t always perfect and that you’re not alone in your fears! In this episode, we touch on fears with DKA episodes, retinopathy and getting unconscious as a result of experiencing a low episode.

Here are 10 short tips for people managing diabetes on how to deal with scary moments:

  • Stay Calm: Take deep breaths to keep anxiety in check.
  • Check Blood Sugar: Monitor your levels immediately to understand the situation.
  • Have a Plan: Know your action steps for high or low blood sugar events.
  • Carry Emergency Supplies: Always have glucose tablets or snacks on hand.
  • Educate Loved Ones: Ensure family and friends know how to help you.
  • Use Medical ID: Wear a medical ID to inform others of your condition.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink water to help manage blood sugar levels.
  • Contact a Professional: Call your doctor if you're unsure or need advice.
  • Review Medication: Double-check you’ve taken the right dose.
  • Rest if Needed: Sit or lie down if you feel dizzy or unwell.

    Stay safe and prepared!
