Diabetes Burnout Story

Welcome to Thapi's #BurnoutTruth Story

According to the @amdiabetesassn: Diabetes Burnout is the state of physical or emotional exhaustion caused by the continuous distress of diabetes (and efforts to self-manage it).

This is my #BurnoutTruth story:

When the year started, I had set the goal to get my hba1c to under 10 as it was always above 10 for over 4 years and basically I started eating healthier and focusing more on my health but that took a lot of work from my side and I struggled to maintain it. I achieved my goal of getting my HBA1C to 7.1 in February and it was the best feeling to date.

But after that I starting going through major burnouts; I started becoming overwhelmed and also social media played a huge role in that but I must admit, I kept going.

Well in August I went through a life-changing event that left me extremely depressed and I was on the brink of giving everything up. I was no longer in control of my diabetes and I let it spiral out of control for quite some time.

I let that one event change everything for me and that led to my biggest burnout. I basically stopped eating which led me to losing 10kgs and on top of that my mental health was also all over the place and that also contributed to my weight loss.

Then in early September, I decided to get a grip on my diabetes care and I started working on it slowly and I was then due to go do my HBA1C again and it came back as 11 and I must say I was mortified. I was so embarrassed that I never ever spoke to anyone about it but that was also a very huge turning point in my life because it made me realise how important it is to take care of yourself; internally and externally. Feed your soul with the positives and all things will work out.

Moral of the story is burnouts are REAL. They aren’t the best but I truly believe that one needs to go through them. Through burnouts you learn more about yourself and this is where the true resilience shows through.

I wanted to share my story because there are so many of us that go through the same things but shy away from talking about it.

We need to share our stories because this is part of diabetes and honestly there is no “perfect” way of dealing with diabetes. #diabetesawarenessmonth

Behind the Burnout Truth Campaign

With National Diabetes Awareness Month happening, we believe it's important to continue our committment with sharing the support as at the end of the day,  we understand and acknowledge that diabetes management is a 24/7 experience.

With that in mind, we've created a #BurnoutTruth initiative to use this chance to shine a public light on an area that's often experienced in the dark by yourself.

Burnout truth is all about showing the realness of having chronic illness burnout and normalising this experience so that others out there know that it is real. By sharing different communtiy stories, we hope that we're able to communicate that the main message is to know that these things happen because you’re a human, whether it’s with diabetes or outside of having diabetes. 😊

Remember to always seek advice from your medical practitioner before changing anything about your diabetes management. The above information is not medical advice.
