Back to school

It’s back to school season which can be an uncertain time for many with a change in routine, lifestyle, and environment. Planning on heading off to school can be stressful, especially for those living with diabetes. Therefore, we have compiled a few tips that we have learned from students over the years on how best to manage diabetes when away at college.

1. Educate your friends about your diabetes

It is important to build a support network around you, with people who can help if you ever get into an emergency. The more people around you who know the better, so we recommend telling your resident advisor (RA), sports coaches, and professors to help them understand and recognize the signs when you are experiencing low blood sugar and how best to help when it happens.

2. Develop an eating routine

Your new college schedule can greatly impact your regular routine. Try to eat at the same time each day so you can more easily compare your blood sugar levels.

3. Keep an emergency kit

Prepare a kit for emergencies with products such as fast-acting insulin, insulin pump, and glucagon tablets. Keep your insulin cool for up to 36 hours at a time with our Glucology Insulin Cooling Pouches, with no ice pack needed these pouches are perfect to carry with you. Also remember to keep pre-packaged foods and drinks in your dorm, and don’t let your supply run too low.

4. Create a list of emergency contacts

These may include your doctors, college health services, insulin pump vendors, pharmacies, or certified diabetes educators. Keep this list with you and make a few copies to give to your close friends.

5. Register with the campus health service (Accommodations)

These resources can be an advocate for you and help make sure your needs are met. You can get special provisions by registering to make your transition smoother.

6. See if there’s a college diabetes network (CDN) club at your school.

These campus clubs are a great resource for students with diabetes and offer great support. There are many perks to having friends with diabetes including a complete understanding of what you are going through and offering support if you feel overwhelmed.

7. Carry all your necessities with you

Make sure you carry your diabetes supplies with you to classes, especially if you don’t know when you are returning to your dorm. Try our Glucology Diabetes Travel Cases, they are a great way to store all of your diabetes accessories in one convenient place, and they fit discreetly into your bag.

8. Have fun

Enjoy this new and exciting time in your life. Don’t let diabetes stop you from achieving your goals!

It is important to look after yourself when at college. Diet, exercise and sleep are important to maintain when away from home. Keep up your regular routine. You won’t have your family around to ensure that you are taking your tablets/checking your insulin levels, so you will need to do this yourself. These tips can help you manage your diabetes and help you have a seamless transition into college life.
