It’s back to school season which can be an uncertain time for many with a change in routine, lifestyle, and environment. Planning on heading off to school can be stressful, especially for those living with diabetes. Therefore, we have compiled a few tips that we have learned from students over the years on how best to manage diabetes when away at college.
1. Educate your friends about your diabetes
It is important to build a support network around you, with people who can help if you ever get into an emergency. The more people around you who know the better, so we recommend telling your resident advisor (RA), sports coaches, and professors to help them understand and recognize the signs when you are experiencing low blood sugar and how best to help when it happens.
2. Develop an eating routine
Your new college schedule can greatly impact your regular routine. Try to eat at the same time each day so you can more easily compare your blood sugar levels.
3. Keep an emergency kit
Prepare a kit for emergencies with products such as fast-acting insulin, insulin pump, and glucagon tablets. These campus clubs are a great resource for students with diabetes and offer great support. There are many perks to having friends with diabetes including a complete understanding of what you are going through and offering support if you feel overwhelmed.
7. Carry all your necessities with you
