Keeping your insulin cool this summer

As the weather starts to warm up it is important to give some extra thought to keeping your insulin cool. We often look forward to the change in seasons and warmer temperatures, however, people living with diabetes sometimes may be more sensitive to these temperatures. It is important to keep your insulin cool to ensure that it is working effectively.

Although spoiled insulin does not give many signs that it is off, it will stop working the way it should, which if you are out and about can cause blood pressure to rise and if left untreated, could have serious consequences.

As recorded by the three major insulin makers (Sanofi, Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly) refrigeration at temperatures between 36º and 46ºF are maintained for insulin products during the manufacturing process and that instills the recommended range. However, make sure you check the recommended temperature on your insulin as some brands may vary. It is also strongly recommended to keep insulin out of the freezer as freezing insulin means it will be immediately ineffective.

Summer months warrant days out at the beach or the pool and it is important to keep your insulin at the right temperature when away from home. If you’re going to be outside for most of the day, invest in a cooler bag or wallet to store your insulin. Try our Glucology Insulin Cooling Pouches that, unlike other cooling bags and pouches that need an ice pack, only need to be immersed in cold water to keep your insulin cool for up to 36 hours at a time, making it perfect for travel. If you need to extend the effects just re-immerse it in cold water to reactivate and keep insulin cool for another 36 hours.

While enjoying the outdoors in summer, avoid becoming dehydrated and drink lots of water. Carry drink bottles and electrolytes with you to keep hydrated in the heat, especially when playing sports. Ask your doctor or diabetes educator how you should adjust your insulin before exercising in the heat and test your blood sugars regularly. As hot temperatures can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate more easily it is important to monitor frequently and adjust dosages accordingly.

Don’t let living with diabetes affect your summer. Plan ahead to ensure a manageable day out and a seamless transition into summer months. By taking a few precautions you can enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle this summer.
